Discovery!

Today, September 2, is the anniversary of the discovery by Dr. Robert Ballard in 1975. They were up in the middle of the night looking at sediment for hours, hoping for some evidence of the fabled liner, TITANIC. Then, they started seeing small pieces of coal and rubble. Finally, they see something recognizable as belonging to the TITANIC. It was one of the massive, 29 boilers. They followed a trail of debris, until they saw the huge hull. It was rust-covered, and it was a little disoriented, but it was clearly recognizable. They monitored the ship's hull, and decks until some twisted metal that lead to nothing. In all the excitement of finding the wreck after 85 years of lying in complete darkness, one man looked at the clock on the wall and noted that it was near 2:20 which was around the time that the TITANIC sank on April 14. They held a brief moment of silence for the 1,500 people that bravely went to their deaths. The wreck had been found and the unknown stories were resurrected again. A lot of questions have been answered, and a lot of questions have been asked. One of the most important, was that the ship broke apart, which was under huge debate. There's many questions still answered, that were made. For instance, what happened to the Grand Staircase? It had gone down six flights, and now there's a gaping hole. We now know a lot about people's lives on board, and what she looks like today, with little hints and touches of elegance.

Scuba Diving to the TITANIC ?

It is virtually impossible to dive to the TITANIC with modern day scuba gear. Submarines are the only means of transportation to the great ship. The reason that the scuba gear will not work is because of the pressure. The pressure is so great, that if there was a leak in the submarine, it would be powerful enough to slice a human body in half. The submarines used to go to that extremities are very few and most of them are either owned by the US Navy or oceanic researchers. This summary also tells you that it's amazing that all those artifacts have survived the pressure for 96 years at the bottom of the ocean. There's glass plates and bottles with corks still sealed and even a crystal glass bottle with the White Star Line insignia still engraved into there. Maybe in the future, we'll have that technology but I fear there will be nothing left by the time they come up with that. My reason is because it takes a very-very-very experienced diver to go to the wrecks of the Andrea Doria or even the Britannic. Maybe it's best that no-one is able to scuba dive to the TITANIC because that would cause more looting, damage to the ship, and possibly more lives due to the unstableness and dark twisted tunnels and caverns in what once was beautiful, large, and airy rooms.

The Wreck Of The TITANIC

The ship lies 2 miles down and both halves are 1,960 feet apart. It would take two hours to get to the bottom. Down there, there's so much pressure that if there were a leak, the water would jet out powerful enough to slice a human body in half. The wreck has decomposed so much, that if we tried to move it, it would collapse into orange dust. The stern is a scrap heap because when the stern sank, it was not completely flooded with water and once it hit the bottom, it imploded. The bow, however is more intact and is more explored which deteriorates it. The cabins, Turkish Bath, Reception Room, and Dining Room all have some bit of elegance in them. When Ballard discovered the wreck, he saw rust hanging down the ship looking like icicles so he called them rusticles. Rusticles not only decompose the wreck, they also preserve it,s shape. In another 50 years, the TITANIC will become a orange spot on the sea floor. When the ship broke apart, contents spilled out like china, chairs, beds, coal, and many other things. The TITANIC is a graveyard. When bodies sank, their flesh was eaten by scavengers and their bones dissolved leaving pairs of shoes as a marker of where they died. The wreck is being scavenged and it's pieces sold (unlawfully). There is only one company that has salvaging rights. Survivors were outraged and made protests about them robbing their family member's grave but that didn't stop their greed. They're even bringing up their shoes and putting them on display without even letting them rest in peace!
